Ethereum Market Deep-Dive: A Tug-of-War Between Institutional Retreat and Whale Accumulation

I. Price Trend Analysis

As of the early hours of October 11 Beijing time, Ethereum spot was trading at $2,508, up 0.8% over the past 24 hours. On the hourly candlestick chart, Ethereum has recently been seesawing around the $2,500 level. Its intraday trading range was approximately $2,504 to $2,515, with trading volume declining somewhat.

The greatest pressure currently facing Ethereum comes from the continued outflow of institutional capital. U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs have recorded net outflows for nine consecutive days. On October 9 alone, outflows totaled $56.1 million, with all redemptions coming from BlackRock’s ETHA fund. Weekly net outflows reached $542 million, marking the worst weekly performance since January. More concerningly, traders are increasing their short positions, with short exposure now exceeding spot holdings—a sign that bearish market sentiment is deepening.

On-chain data, however, paints a very different picture. During Ethereum’s weakness, whale addresses accumulated more than 166,000 ETH. Some large withdrawals were transferred to private wallets for storage, effectively absorbing recent selling pressure. This divergence between institutional retreat and whale accumulation has provided relatively strong support for Ethereum around $2,500.

II. Technical Indicator Analysis

On the one-hour timeframe, Ethereum’s composite indicator reading is +0.85, generating a buy signal, with an overall win rate as high as 80.85%. Of the 15 technical factors, nine signal a buy, five signal a sell, and one remains neutral, giving the bulls a clear advantage.

For moving averages, the 7-period average is at $2,509, the 25-period average at $2,501, and the 99-period average at $2,529. The current price is near the short-term moving averages but clearly below the 99-period average, indicating that the medium- to long-term trend remains weak.

For the MACD indicator, the DIF line is at 3.53, the DEA line at 3.49, and the histogram is just 0.03, close to the zero line. This means buying and selling pressure are temporarily balanced, with the next directional move depending on trading volume.

For the RSI indicator, RSI6 is 42.02, RSI12 is 51.673, and RSI24 is 49.19, placing the overall reading in neutral-to-weak territory. RSI6 has fallen below 50, indicating some weakening in short-term momentum.

The KDJ indicator shows clear oversold conditions: K has fallen to 31.78, D is at 50.02, and J has dropped to -4.71. A negative J value is an extreme oversold signal, and historically, such signals have often been followed by technical rebounds.

For Bollinger Bands, the upper band is at $2,517, the middle band at $2,504, and the lower band at $2,490. The price is trading near the middle band, while the bands continue to narrow, suggesting a directional breakout may be approaching.

III. Market Sentiment Analysis

The Ethereum market is currently in a period of low sentiment. Nine consecutive days of ETF outflows have seriously dented market confidence. In addition, a hardware wallet security incident that led to the theft of more than $86 million in assets has further dampened investors’ risk appetite.

Fundamentally, however, the Ethereum ecosystem continues to see several positive developments. The development team is continuing to advance the Lean Ethereum roadmap, while news of AI-accelerated development has boosted community confidence. Binance’s move to accept tokenized stocks as collateral has also created more use cases for the Ethereum ecosystem.

In the short term, Ethereum is likely to trade sideways within the $2,490–$2,520 range. The KDJ’s extreme oversold signal suggests a technical rebound could occur at any time, but pressure from continued ETF outflows should not be ignored. If the price can firmly hold above $2,520, it may be able to challenge $2,600. If it falls below support at $2,490, it could test the $2,400 round-number level.

Among today’s trending tokens, STRK is trading at $0.10487, up as much as 43.48% in 24 hours, driven by news of a quantum-resistant migration. MBL is trading at $0.001017, up 34.88%. CHIP is trading at $0.06708, up 29.30%.
