【More than doubled in three months, but the way I’m looking at NEAR this time feels just like how I looked at those “10x coins” in 2017】
In November 2017, I got my first taste of altcoin season. NEO went up 12x in three months, and even the street sweepers were asking, “What’s a smart contract?” Back then, I wondered if this stuff had any real use. The answer didn’t matter—if it was going up, that was good enough.
Then it fell 90% in 2018, and I watched those “Blockchain 3.0” projects tumble from their pedestals with my own eyes.
NEAR’s price action lately has me feeling a little déjà vu. Up 112% in 30 days, 11% in 7 days, and 7.5% in 24 hours. The numbers are right there; even a fool can see them. But is there anything real backing this rally?
Let’s talk about market sentiment. The Fear and Greed Index is at 64, in the green, while Bitcoin’s market dominance is 59.1%—the money is piled into Bitcoin, and liquidity is actually draining from altcoins. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $244 million in outflows on Thursday, Bitcoin returned to around $82.5K, and the market has more or less absorbed the Ledger situation. Taken together, these signals suggest Bitcoin has stabilized, but money hasn’t yet flowed from Bitcoin into NEAR.
So here’s the question: is this NEAR rally just a game of musical chairs with existing capital, or is someone spinning a story while waiting to offload their bags?
Valuation-wise, NEAR is down 74% from its peak, putting it in oversold-bounce territory. But the most important lesson I learned in 2017 was this: just because something has fallen a lot doesn’t mean it’s due to rise. You have to ask whether the fundamentals have fundamentally changed.
Can the business case actually be delivered? That’s what I really want to know. NEAR aims to be a high-performance layer-1 blockchain, taking on Ethereum’s scalability challenges. But Ethereum is still very much alive, and challengers like Solana and Avalanche aren’t sitting still either. Can NEAR’s technical advantages translate into real users and real transaction volume? I don’t have a confident answer yet.
So all I can say about this rally is: short-term momentum is definitely strong, but strong momentum doesn’t mean you should chase it. I’ve seen too many “valuation recovery” scripts, and they all end the same way—the story runs its course, the money goes in, and retail investors are left holding the bag.
Of course, the AI narrative behind this could be the real deal. I’m not saying it isn’t. But I can tell you what I’m doing: this time, I’m staying on the sidelines. I may be itching to jump in, but I’m not actually buying.
What about you? How are you feeling right now? Would you chase this rally? Are you getting itchy trigger fingers?
