A few things to note about the Lightning Network:
1) Once a channel is opened, payments between the two parties simply involve exchanging the latest mutually signed balance records. Each payment doesn’t need to be recorded on-chain, so settlements are essentially instant.
2) When a channel is closed, the final balance is settled to the Bitcoin main chain in an on-chain transaction.
3) If you run your own Lightning node, try to keep it online, or use a watchtower service to prevent the other party from settling the channel using an outdated state while you’re offline.
The Lightning Network still moves $BTC ; it’s just that most payments don’t need to be written to the chain individually. Current price: 83064.
