The Lightning Network is an off-chain payment network built on Bitcoin. Its white paper was published by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja in 2015.
Lightning wallets are better suited for everyday, small payments. For long-term storage, it’s safer to keep your Bitcoin in an on-chain wallet where you control the private keys.
The Lightning Network also handles $BTC ; most payments just don’t need to be recorded on-chain one by one.
