📚 Educational Series | Understanding ETF Flows: Institutions Vote with Real Money

This episode will teach you how to read one indicator: spot ETF flows.

Why does it matter? ETFs are the most transparent channel for institutional money entering and exiting the crypto market. Inflows mean institutions are adding to their positions; outflows mean they’re reducing them—a way to track the moves of “smart money.”

What data should you look at?
1️⃣ Net flows: Are funds flowing in or out? Recently, cumulative October outflows from $BTC and $ETH spot ETFs approached $1 billion, suggesting institutions are generally cautious.
2️⃣ Consistency: A single day of outflows may be an anomaly; consecutive outflows are more meaningful. Ethereum ETFs have seen net outflows for eight consecutive trading days, with redemption pressure persisting.
3️⃣ Know what the data measures: ETF flows track changes in assets held at the fund-product level. Liquidations (such as the roughly $1.1 billion in liquidations triggered when BTC previously fell below $81,000) are an immediate market-level reaction. The two types of data aren’t directly equivalent.

How can you use it?
• Slowing outflows or a shift to inflows → a sign sentiment may be recovering
• A growing streak of consecutive outflow days → institutions may still have a low risk appetite
• Combine with on-chain data: Around 55,000 BTC recently moved to exchanges, so potential selling pressure warrants caution

Regulation is also advancing in Asia: Thailand has finalized rules for crypto spot ETFs, and BTC and ETH funds can trade on the Thai exchange starting next week—opening up a new channel for capital.
