I stared at the green candlestick on the screen, my finger hovering over the “Buy” button, but I couldn’t bring myself to press it.

It was late one night in 2024. MBL had just been listed on Binance, and its price was only a few thousandths of a U. Someone in the group chat shouted, “This coin has a story—get in!” I opened the white paper and read a couple of pages. The project team seemed to be promising way too much, and the community was full of bots, so I casually closed the page.

The next morning, MBL was up 30 percent. I told myself a rebound in a small-cap coin was totally normal, and not to chase the price.

A week later, MBL had climbed from 0.0005 to 0.001. My social media feed was flooded with screenshots of people’s profits. Someone posted a screenshot showing a 50x return, captioned with the words “turning insight into profit.” I opened the trading page and looked at the price, thinking there was still time to get in, so I placed a limit order. But the price just kept climbing, always staying a little above my order. It never filled.

A month later, MBL broke through 0.005. I did the math: if I’d bought on the first day it was listed, I’d be up 100x by now. One hundred times. I slammed my calculator onto the desk, stood up, and walked to the window. As I looked out at the city lights, all I could think about was that Buy button I hadn’t pressed.

The most tormenting thing isn’t losing money. It’s seeing an opportunity right in front of you, then watching it slip through your fingers because of hesitation and doubt. I started obsessively combing through MBL’s community and found several people I knew among the early holders. One of them was my college roommate. He posted in the group chat, “I just thought it looked fun back then, so I bought a little,” and got more than twenty likes.

Later, the market pulled back, and MBL fell 40 percent from its high. I thought my chance had finally come, so I rushed in to buy the dip. But I bought halfway down, and it fell another 30 percent. The day I cut my losses and got out, my account was down 20,000 yuan.

Now MBL is trading around 0.0011, having reached an intraday high of 0.001381. I look at the price and think back to that late night two years ago—and the button I never pressed.

The most expensive thing in crypto isn’t Bitcoin. It’s the phrase “if only I’d known.”

Every hesitation is a reminder: when your understanding is lacking, even when luck comes your way, you won’t be able to seize it. I’m no longer dwelling on the 100x I missed, because I know that if I have the same mindset when the next opportunity comes along, nothing will turn out any differently.

There’s only one lesson: if you don’t understand it, try with a small position. Don’t wait until you understand it to buy—by then, the price has already given you the answer, and the answer is never cheap.
