🧠 COVID in the family and cryptocurrencies:
how a health crisis changes attitudes toward risk
DVA ANALYTICS • FACT → MECHANISM → RISK → DECISION
Can experiencing illness among loved ones affect decisions to invest in Bitcoin and other crypto assets?
A study by Pengcheng Wang, Yanyan Shang, and Zefeng Bai, published in the International Journal of Bank Marketing in 2026, analyzed data from 2,510 Americans in the 2021 National Financial Capability Study. The result: household experience with COVID-19 was statistically associated with a greater propensity to invest in cryptocurrencies. The association was more pronounced among people without financial education.
MECHANISM. A crisis can change how people perceive uncertainty. Some people become more cautious, while others seek new opportunities, strive for financial independence, or try to compensate for a feeling of lost control. The crypto market, with its 24/7 access and significant price fluctuations, may seem like a path to rapid change.
However, the study identifies a statistical association; it does not prove that experiencing COVID itself caused the investment decision.
RISK. Stress, fear about the future, and the desire to quickly improve one’s financial situation can weaken critical judgment. Risk arises when someone invests money needed for living expenses, mistakes hope for calculation, or tries to recoup losses.
DECISION. Before buying a crypto asset, determine your goal, time horizon, and acceptable level of loss. Do not use money set aside for medical care, housing, and basic needs for speculation. Research the asset, understand how it works, and do not make decisions under emotional pressure.
Financial literacy is not the ability to predict every market movement. It is the ability to understand risk before it becomes a personal problem.
Preserving values and time.
Not financial advice. Crypto assets are volatile; significant financial losses are possible.
