6 million bitcoins are sitting right in hackers’ crosshairs.
Ethereum researchers have already sounded the alarm, urging everyone to go into “defense mode” against AI attacks. Quantum computing has made huge strides over the past two years, and the ECDSA signatures used by early Bitcoin addresses are like tissue paper against Shor’s algorithm.
Charles Edwards warned earlier that 4.5 million BTC, worth $550 billion, are held in quantum-vulnerable addresses. That’s more than 60% of Bitcoin’s supply.
The wildest part is that the attack strategy is called “harvest now, decrypt later”: hackers save your public key today, then take everything once quantum computers are ready.
I think the market is underestimating this. When Q-Day actually arrives, there won’t be time to run.
