Adding to a position isn’t “lowering your average cost”—it’s doubling down on a gamble with your money.

Too many people can’t do the math. You buy $10,000 worth at $10, then throw another $10,000 at it when it drops to $5—and think you’ve brought your average cost down from $10 to $7.50. Not quite. After those two buys, you’ve put in $20,000 for 3,000 tokens, so your average price is indeed $6.67. But you’ve also doubled the size of the drawdown you’re exposed to. A 20% drop used to cost you $2,000; now it costs you $4,000. Adding to your position doesn’t ease the pressure—it adds leverage.

LINK traders know this feeling all too well. At $12.87, plenty of people who started buying much higher have kept adding as the price fell. Their average entry looks lower, but their risk exposure keeps growing. Double your position and your nerves can give out. And in the end, the people who cut their losses are often the ones who added a second or third time. If your first buy is down 10%, you can still get out. After three rounds of adding, the price has to rise 50% just for you to break even. The more you add, the farther away breakeven gets; the farther away it gets, the more anxious you become; and the more anxious you are, the more you add—a vicious cycle.

It’s even tougher with ETH. The $2,666–$2,689 zone above is a brick wall of resistance. How many people around $2,600 confidently declared, “This is the bottom,” only to find after another round of buying that they’d pushed their own breakeven point even higher?

LINK recently launched one-click cross-chain vault deposits, covering more than 80 chains, including ETH and SOL. Its DeFi toolkit is definitely getting smoother. But the more convenient the tools, the more dangerous things get for people who can’t keep their hands off the buy button. The only time it makes sense to add is when you’re not already in a position and you’ve got the direction right—not when you’re underwater and looking for comfort.

Old Ma’s Little Dog puts it plainly: save your bullets first, then talk about a comeback. Tonight, I’m watching to see if LINK can hold $12.50. If it breaks, I’ll make my next move.
