NEAR at $5.35—would you chase it?

At first glance: NEAR started at $1.60 in August, gained over 140% in 30 days, and surged to a $7.2 billion market cap, breaking into the top 20 and overtaking Stellar. It gained 198% in Q3, compared with Bitcoin’s 43% and Ethereum’s 71%. The daily uptrend remains intact, but in the short term, price has been repeatedly testing resistance at $5.40–$5.60.

First: The ETF has launched, but the news may already be priced in.
Bitwise’s spot NEAR ETF (ticker: NRR), the first of its kind, debuted on the NYSE on October 9. Sounds exciting, right? But look at the price action: it failed to break above $5.60 on launch day and instead hovered around $5.30.
Why? Buy the rumor, sell the news. The rally from $1.60 to $5.35 was driven by ETF expectations. Once the ETF actually launched, early investors had the perfect opportunity to sell into the buying.

Second: After a 140% rally, can the fundamentals support the price?
NEAR’s fundamentals are relatively solid among layer-1 blockchains:
Cumulative Intents trading volume exceeds $30 billion, with annual fees of around $45 million
Some of the revenue goes toward buybacks
AI agents, chain abstraction, and private transactions—it’s hitting several major trends
Its “default-private” perpetual contracts, developed in partnership with Hyperliquid, drove a 27% single-day rally on September 17
With a $7.2 billion market cap and $45 million in annual fees, is it overvalued?

Third: The technicals say chasing here offers very poor risk-reward.
NEAR’s rally has followed a “stair-step” pattern, with pullbacks to confirm each breakout. But the gains over the past few days have often come alongside short liquidations—there were short squeezes on October 5 and 6. What does that mean? Part of the rally was driven by shorts being stopped out, rather than by pure buying pressure.
At $5.35, price is just $0.25 below resistance at $5.60, but $0.35 above support at $5.00. There’s less room to move up and more room to fall.

Trading strategy
Plan A: Buy the pullback (preferred)
Entry: Scale in between $4.95 and $5.10
Stop-loss: A daily close below $4.65
Targets: $5.60 → $6.00 → $6.50
Plan B: Follow the breakout
Condition: A 4-hour or daily close holds above $5.60, with increased volume
Entry: Buy a pullback to $5.45–$5.55 if support holds
Stop-loss: Below $5.20
Targets: $6.00–$6.40
Plan C: Small countertrend short (experienced traders only)
Condition: A long upper wick or a high-volume stall after a push to $5.45–$5.60, with ETF inflows falling short of expectations
Stop-loss: Above $5.75
Targets: $5.00 → $4.85; take profits quickly
At the current price of $5.35: I don’t recommend chasing a long. If you’re already long, scale out between $5.50 and $5.60, and raise the stop-loss on the remaining position to above $5.00.
