The worst-hit victim was a Bitcoin investor.
Four months ago, they bought 80 $BTC at an average price of $65,000,
investing $5.2 million in principal alone. At one point, their unrealized profit had reached $1.38 million.
For security, they specifically bought a Ledger cold wallet from the reseller CryptoBilis a week ago and transferred all 80 BTC into it.
But not long after the funds were deposited, the entire wallet was drained. Both the principal and the profits were wiped out.
Even more shocking, this wasn't an isolated case.
Another user bought a Ledger from the same reseller three weeks ago and deposited 7 million USDT into it, only to suffer the same kind of theft.
According to blockchain security researcher Specter, there may be hundreds of affected wallets across multiple networks, including BTC, ETH, and TRON. Estimated cumulative losses have already exceeded $86 million.
People buy cold wallets to protect themselves from hackers, but now even the cold wallets they buy may be compromised.
Ledger is currently investigating the incident involving CryptoBilis. The exact attack method and final amount of losses have yet to be determined.
If you also use Ledger, especially if you bought one from CryptoBilis in the past 90 days, take a close look at the official advisory.
If your device hasn't been initialized yet, don't activate it for now.
If you've already been using your device, follow the official security migration process and move your assets to a wallet with a new recovery phrase generated by a trusted device.
If you bought your device through another channel, make sure to verify its source, and never use a recovery phrase provided in advance.
I think I finally understand: the hardest part of crypto might not actually be making money, but making sure it doesn't suddenly disappear once you've earned it.
We used to worry about exchanges collapsing, then about stolen on-chain approvals. Now we even have to worry about the hardware wallet supply chain.
