Without a sufficient order-book liquidity moat when markets face extreme conditions, even the most beautiful technical chart patterns can be smashed through by large orders in minutes. A year ago today, the crypto market witnessed the power of a liquidity vacuum amid more than $19 billion in cascading liquidations in a single day. One year later, order-book data reveals a harsh truth: the lifelines of major coins and altcoins are diverging completely.
【Order-book depth fully recovers: Major coins surpass pre-crash levels】
According to the latest market liquidity depth-tracking report published by CoinDesk Research, on the first anniversary of the largest liquidation event in history, which erupted on October 10, 2025, order-book depth for Bitcoin and Ether has fully recovered to pre-crash levels and even reached new all-time highs. Altcoins and spot trading volume, however, remain far from emerging from their liquidity slump.
CoinDesk Research compared the value of limit orders on major centralized exchanges (CEXs) at four points: early 2025, the crash day, early 2026, and this week. The data shows that within the key defense zone 1% from the market price, Bitcoin's order-book depth had recovered to $11.7 million by October 7—about 75% higher than on the crash day a year earlier, and above the $9 million recorded early this year and $6.9 million in early 2025. Depth in the wider 5% range also reached $24 million. Researcher Saksham Diwan noted that this is by no means a passive effect of price movements, but a tangible commitment by market makers and institutions, putting real money back into major coins.
【0.5% order-book depth doubles: Ether drains altcoin liquidity】
What does this mean for readers? Ether has shown order-book resilience in this liquidity recovery that even exceeds Bitcoin's. According to CoinDesk's report, Ether's order-book depth within the ultra-tight 0.5% range of the market price has doubled since the crash day, surpassing $4.2 million. Depth within the 1% range has also risen by about 75% to $5.3 million, exceeding levels for the same period in each of the past two years. Meanwhile, in the same tracked basket, altcoin order-book depth within the 5% range has shrunk by about a third in total since early 2025, leaving only around $2 million; depth within the 1% range has also contracted by one-sixth.
CoinDesk Head of Research Joshua de Vos said bluntly that major coins are the final destination for capital regrouping amid the ruins, and that institutions will continue to abandon secondary altcoins. On Binance's spot market, ETH was most recently quoted at around $2,496, trading in a narrow range of $2,474 to $2,504 over the past 24 hours as it consolidated. Daily spot trading volume was about 254 million USDT (approximately 102,000 ETH). The recovery in order-book depth gives ETH several times the downside resilience of ordinary altcoins, making it less vulnerable to a sudden plunge caused by a single whale's sell-off or deleveraging.
【Key factors to watch: Weekly CEX spot volume and the $2,520 breakout】
Looking ahead, investors should closely monitor two verifiable signals:
First, whether total spot-market volume can return to the $350 billion high-volume platform. CoinDesk data shows that although order-book depth has recovered, average weekly CEX spot trading volume over the four weeks through September 27 was only around $279 billion, still nearly two-thirds below the $801 billion recorded during the crash week. A genuine signal of a bullish counterattack is not static orders from market makers, but a meaningful increase in spot trading volume. If weekly volume cannot break above $350 billion, high order-book depth can only provide passive downside protection and is unlikely to translate into momentum for a sustained uptrend;
Second, watch the Binance spot market's $2,470 support and $2,520 range ceiling. On the current 4-hour chart, ETH is seeing concentrated buying above $2,474. If buyers use the $5.3 million of order-book depth within the 1% range to hold the $2,470 support, and ETH consolidates before breaking above the $2,520 top of the range, it could open the way for a move out of the range and a further test of resistance at $2,580 to $2,620. Conversely, if macroeconomic news jolts the broader market and trading volume falls below $2,470, watch for a retest of $2,420 in search of deeper institutional buying.
