Will AI wipe out cryptography in two years? That’s not what Vitalik actually said.

It started with Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s October 7 call for “bunker mode”: OpenAI used 10,000 agents to solve the Navier–Stokes equations in 88 hours, and AI is doing math faster than expected. Vitalik followed up with a checklist, not an end-of-the-world prophecy: the security margin for lattice cryptography may be down to just two years, and his prescription is to increase key sizes by 10×. FHE and ML-DSA are also in the newly emerging risk zone.

But he also urged caution on two fronts: don’t rush to migrate your wallet—he’s seen firsthand that people lose more through a fumbled migration than through a hack. This is an engineering effort measured in years, not days. Hoskinson and Coinbase chief cryptographer Yehuda Lindell have already publicly pushed back, saying the evidence is insufficient.

Crypto’s habit is to translate “be careful” into “the end is nigh.” The real signal is that the tech world is already changing its defenses (Ethereum’s Lean is moving to hash-only signatures), while most people are still just watching the charts.

Is today the first time you’ve heard the term “lattice cryptography”?
