again called for the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to be invoked against President Donald Trump, following his controversial remarks about the possibility of Iran attacking Los Angeles and San Diego.

The Republican president said at a rally in Nebraska that Iran could attack an American city and mentioned both California cities, describing the potential cost as a “small price” in the context of the war.

Newsom reacted on October 6 with a forceful statement and called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked. The next day, Fox News reported on his call to remove Trump from the presidency.

The White House rejected the criticism and maintained that Trump was referring to the threats that, according to his argument, would have existed if Iran had managed to develop nuclear weapons.

The 25th Amendment establishes a constitutional procedure for declaring that a president is unable to discharge the duties of the office. Section 4 requires the involvement of the vice president and a majority of the principal officers of the executive departments, as well as possible subsequent steps before Congress.

So far, Newsom’s call amounts to a political demand, not a removal from office or confirmation that the mechanism has been activated.
