I used to confuse price moving above a moving average with a bullish moving-average crossover. It took me a while to understand: these are often talked about as if they were the same thing, but they’re not. Moving above a moving average is about the price’s position relative to the average; a crossover is about the relationship between two moving averages, such as MA50 crossing above MA200.
A price moving above a long-term moving average is often seen as one sign that the trend may be improving, while falling below it is often seen as a sign of weakening. But one cross alone isn’t enough to tell you much.
Understanding an indicator helps you avoid being misled by the numbers—not use it to predict whether prices will rise or fall.
