What happened?
There was a dangerous bug in the XRP Ledger dating back to 2015!
Researchers Cayden Liao and Veria AI discovered it.
It was reported on Sept 22, and RippleX fixed it on Sept 25 (v3.4.1).
How did the bug work?
An attacker created hundreds of fake accounts,
Each account offered a small token in exchange for a LARGE amount of XRP,
Then bought all the offers in a single payment!
Because of an integer overflow, the software couldn't count correctly,
The seller received the full amount of XRP, but the buyer wasn't charged anything!
That meant FREE XRP could be created! 🤯
XRP's total supply is fixed at just 100 billion!
This bug could break that rule. Billions of dollars' worth of XRP could have been created out of thin air!
RippleX confirmed the bug was real and that the XRP could be spent,
But said there was NO evidence that it had been exploited on the public network. 🙏
More than 80% of validators have updated to 3.4.1.
This bug, hidden for 10 years, has now been patched.
