According to CNBC, police detained scores of protesters and leaders in New Delhi on Saturday as thousands of security personnel patrolled the city and travel and telecom links were suspended to stop a youth protest demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar quit. The protest, organized by the Cockroach youth movement, was aimed at drawing thousands of demonstrators over a revision of voter lists that critics say favors Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party. Police also detained Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and senior leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka as their flight from Mumbai landed in Delhi, while the group said four reporters from digital media outlets were also detained. Elsewhere in the capital, 45 metro stations and markets were shut and mobile internet was suspended in the central business district. The protest was planned as the biggest in a series of demonstrations after the Indian Express reported that Kumar's deputies had queried and disagreed with him over list revisions that removed about 130 million voters.
