Tokenization launches in its first version, but settlement is still T+2

▪️ Brazil’s largest stock exchange plans to launch a tokenization platform in the first half of 2027
▪️ Tokens and traditional stocks will share the same order book, prices, and liquidity
▪️ But settlement will initially remain T+2—not instant
▪️ 24/7 trading and instant settlement are still awaiting regulatory approval

Two things are most often promised with tokenization: around-the-clock trading and instant settlement. The platform launching this time delivers only half of the first, while the second stays put—the tokenized assets still run on a non-tokenized clock.

The key is in the design. Tokens won’t trade on a separate market; they’ll share the same order book, prices, and liquidity as traditional stocks. The upside is that the order book isn’t split. The trade-off is that settlement must follow the existing system: the two halves of assets on the same order book can’t be cleared using two different clocks.

The exchange is also working on two complementary initiatives: applying for a digital asset custody license and preparing to issue its own stablecoin. Taken together, these suggest its role is changing—from an intermediary that matches trades to one seeking control over issuance, custody, and settlement. Officials have yet to confirm whether the two products will be interoperable at launch.
The real question isn’t whether tokenization is coming, but which layer gets tokenized first. Prices and liquidity go on-chain first, because that doesn’t upset anyone’s apple cart. Settlement and clearing come later, because they involve changing who owns the infrastructure.

Watch three things next: whether T+2 is changed in the second version, how the exchange’s stablecoin will interoperate with the platform, and whether regulators approve around-the-clock trading.
