NEAR is preparing for quantum attacks! Accounts now support ML-DSA signatures

Vitalik recently urged everyone to pay attention to the potential impact of AI on cryptographic security, and NEAR has already started taking action.

The NEAR mainnet added the NIST-standardized post-quantum signature algorithm ML-DSA-65 in its 2.13 upgrade.

Why is this worth paying attention to?
👉 Existing accounts can upgrade their keys: there’s no need to transfer assets to a new address just to switch signature algorithms.

👉 Post-quantum signatures: ML-DSA is based on lattice cryptography and doesn’t rely on the security assumptions of traditional elliptic-curve cryptography.

👉 Users can migrate gradually: the new algorithm can coexist with existing signature methods, so not everyone needs to upgrade at the same time.

👉 There are still limitations: for now, the upgrade mainly covers account access keys and transaction signatures. Other areas, such as validators’ staking keys, have not yet been fully upgraded to be quantum-resistant.

What’s truly worth paying attention to isn’t just what NEAR has done first.

It’s that the entire crypto industry needs to start asking:
If the assumptions underlying cryptographic security change in the future, can we upgrade without migrating assets or changing account addresses?

NEAR’s account design points to a promising approach.
It’s still unclear when the threat from quantum computing will become real, but establishing an upgrade path in advance has already become an important blockchain security issue.
