Simply put, RSI measures how much of the total upward and downward movement over a recent period came from upward movement: the stronger and more sustained the gains, the closer RSI gets to 100.
When RSI enters overbought or oversold territory, a more prudent approach is to first ask yourself: What’s the overall trend? Where are the key support levels? Can my position withstand a move in the opposite direction?
The same data can mean very different things in different market conditions, so don’t blindly apply a single rule of thumb.
