Bitcoin’s Overall Volatility Is Declining, but Extreme Daily Price Swings Are More Frequent Than in 2018

According to PANews on October 10, 2026, citing CoinDesk analysis, Bitcoin has recorded 10 extreme “3-sigma” volatility days so far in 2026, already exceeding the 8 recorded throughout 2018. These days involve daily price movements at least three times the realized volatility of the previous 30 days.

However, Bitcoin’s annualized volatility is currently around 46%, significantly below the approximately 84% recorded in 2018. The average magnitude of extreme daily moves has also declined from around 10% to approximately 7%.

Since 2024, Bitcoin has recorded 26 days of 3-sigma volatility, more than the S&P 500, the FTSE 100, and gold.

The key takeaway: Bitcoin’s overall volatility is declining, but sudden, unusually large price movements are becoming more frequent. This suggests traders should remain cautious and manage risk carefully during periods of extreme market activity.
