Ledger hardware wallets tampered with: losses nearing $90 million
Something has gone wrong with Ledger hardware wallets. Wallets belonging to a group of users in Southeast Asia were emptied; $BTC , $ETH, and $USDT are all gone. Their seed phrases had never been online. The common factor: all the wallets were bought from CryptoBilis, an authorized distributor in Malaysia.
In a statement on October 9, Ledger said it had asked CryptoBilis to suspend all sales and shipments, and said its own systems had not been compromised.
Estimated losses keep climbing. On-chain estimates range from $72 million to $86 million. Bitquery puts the figure at $92.9 million across 311 wallets, while Ledger has confirmed none of the losses. The largest single loss was 7 million USDT; another user lost 80 BTC.
Tether has frozen some of the USDT involved. CryptoBilis has stopped selling all branded hardware wallets in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and closed its stores. The root cause has yet to be determined.
