The longer you work in this field, the more you start to notice a pattern: the market is never short of breaking news. Today someone’s assets are frozen; tomorrow another firm is hit with regulatory action. Every time something happens, the group chat erupts as if the sky were falling.
In my experience, people who can actually hold on for good results are never led around by the nose by the news. When a story breaks, emotions are often at their most extreme. Making decisions based on those emotions is likely to get you burned from both sides. It’s usually much more comfortable to wait a day or two for the market to calm down, see where the money is really flowing, and then move gradually with the trend, rather than rushing in right away.
I’m not saying you should ignore the news completely—just don’t treat it as the whole picture. In my view, those of us who trade should first get our position sizing and pace in order. Whatever happens, being able to sleep soundly with the positions we hold is more important than anything else.
If you’ve been in the market for a while, have you ever had a similar experience of being swept along by breaking news? Feel free to share in the comments.
