There’s a guy in our group who used to write code at Nanshan Science and Technology Park. He was laid off at 35 and got a severance package. Added to what he’d saved, he had around 300,000 yuan.

He didn’t look for another job. He thought he could make a living trading. During the Bitcoin rally last July and August, he can’t even remember how he opened his positions. Anyway, he went heavily into altcoins and added leveraged futures. Within a few dozen days, his unrealized profits had climbed to nearly two million yuan. Back then, the group was still buzzing at three in the morning. He posted screenshots every day, and when he got up at noon, the first thing he did was check his balance before replying to messages. He bought a really noisy massage chair, and talked with his wife about whether to move to Futian or Bao’an. They even went to look at apartments twice.

You can probably guess what happened next. One day, a little after four in the morning, a long wick plunged down. It was all over in half an hour. He was asleep at the time and hadn’t set a stop-loss. When he woke up, the first thing he saw was a liquidation alert, followed by a search through his messages for every “if only…”.

They never finished talking about moving. The massage chair is still taking up space in the living room, and now it’s just a reminder. He’s still around, but a while ago he left a few group chats. He only posts on Moments once every six months now, and changed his status to a full stop.

Have you ever known anyone who made money too fast, then gave it all back? How did they manage to get through it?
