Bitcoin-based life insurance company Meanwhile has raised $37.5 million in a new funding round, highlighting growing interest among wealthy families in using Bitcoin for long-term wealth preservation and inheritance planning.

The Bermuda-regulated company has now raised more than $180 million in total funding. Bain Capital Crypto led the latest round, with participation from Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also among the company's backers.

Bitcoin Meets Traditional Life Insurance

Meanwhile describes itself as the first life insurer licensed to operate entirely in Bitcoin. Its business model combines life insurance with Bitcoin-denominated savings and inheritance planning.

In early 2026, the company introduced BTC Life 1-Pay, a whole-life insurance product designed for wealthy clients outside the United States. Customers pay a single premium in Bitcoin and receive a guaranteed death benefit denominated in Bitcoin for life, subject to the policy's terms.

After the first year, policyholders can borrow up to 90% of the policy's value without a fixed repayment schedule or margin calls, according to the company.

Meanwhile also offers BTC 10-Pay, a product designed for US taxpayers.

Growing International Demand

The latest funding follows increased demand for Bitcoin life insurance in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Meanwhile said it has signed 15 brokers serving wealthy families, with connections to markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland.

The company's products are designed to help Bitcoin holders transfer their wealth to the next generation while maintaining exposure to Bitcoin.

This reflects a broader change in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin is increasingly being considered not only as an investment asset but also as a component of estate planning and long-term financial management.

Bitcoin-Denominated Financial Structure

Unlike conventional insurers that generally report their financial positions in fiat currencies, Meanwhile denominates its balance sheet, reserves and audited financial statements in Bitcoin.

Its operating entity, Meanwhile Insurance Bitcoin (Bermuda) Limited, received a Class IILT licence from the Bermuda Monetary Authority in July 2024. The company says policyholders' Bitcoin is held with regulated institutional custodians.

Meanwhile also reported that its net long-term underwriting income has already exceeded its total for the previous year and is on track to more than double in 2026. However, it did not disclose specific income figures.

What Does This Mean for Bitcoin?

The funding round signals growing institutional interest in financial products built around Bitcoin ownership. Life insurance could provide another use case for Bitcoin beyond trading, payments and investment.

If demand for Bitcoin-based wealth management continues to grow, it could strengthen Bitcoin's role in long-term financial planning and encourage further development of regulated cryptocurrency services.

However, the funding announcement does not guarantee that Bitcoin's price will rise. The company's growth also does not establish that Bitcoin insurance products are suitable for every investor. Customers must consider policy terms, custody arrangements, regulatory protections and Bitcoin's price volatility.

Conclusion

Meanwhile's $37.5 million funding round highlights an emerging market for Bitcoin-denominated insurance and inheritance planning. Its long-term significance will depend on customer adoption, financial performance and the ability of regulated Bitcoin-based products to gain wider acceptance.
