Dongcha AI News Flash: Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen has released Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo and made its model weights available. This accelerated version of Qwen-Image-2.1 retains the 7-billion-parameter image-generation architecture. The original model's official examples use 40 denoising steps, while Turbo reduces that to 8 steps—an 80% reduction. Denoising is the process by which the model progressively generates an image from noise. However, reducing the number of steps by 80% does not mean that actual generation time is also reduced by 80%. The new model can still generate 2K images and supports text-instruction-based image editing, multi-image references, and transparent-background output. Developers can run it locally through Hugging Face's Diffusers library, which automatically uses the recommended 8-step sampling settings. The Turbo and Pro APIs are also now available. At Alibaba Cloud Bailian's Beijing region list prices, Turbo costs ¥0.1 per image, while Pro costs ¥0.25, making Turbo 60% cheaper. Some users have reported noticeably faster generation, but feedback on image quality is mixed. One user testing the model on an RTX 5090 found that Turbo over-sharpens skin textures in generated human figures. There are currently not enough independent evaluations to confirm that its image quality is on par with the original version. Note that Turbo uses the Qwen Research License. Although the model weights can be downloaded, free use is limited to non-commercial research and evaluation. Commercial use of the weights requires a separate authorization application.
