What’s truly fragile about BTC isn’t its $82,600 price, but the institutional cost basis around $81,000.

The average cost basis for U.S. spot ETF holders is about $81,722, and for publicly traded companies about $80,500; at $82,600, the current price is only 1%–3% higher. On October 7–8, prices fell back toward the cost-basis zone, and spot ETFs saw $729 million in net outflows over two days.

As of October 5, realized market cap had increased by $12.8 billion over 30 days, while new funds from ETFs, stablecoins, and corporate treasuries totaled just $4.9 billion. Prices seem to be buoyed more by existing holdings changing hands than by a relay of fresh money.

Don’t treat $81,000 as a floor: it’s the breakeven threshold for recent buyers. If prices break below it, redemption and selling pressure—which conventional on-chain metrics may struggle to fully capture—could emerge.
