Bearish🪙 When we talk about investing in gold, we usually think of buying jewelry, a coin, or a physical bar.
But in the crypto world there are also tokens that represent real gold.
Today I want to compare two of them: Tether Gold $XAUT and PAX Gold $PAXG
🟡 WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON?
Both are designed to represent ownership of physical gold through tokens that you can buy, sell, and transfer digitally.
Each XAUT represents one fine troy ounce of gold, and each PAXG likewise represents one fine troy ounce.
This means that their value is tied to the price of gold, not to the dollar as is the case with USDT.
WHAT ARE THEIR DIFFERENCES?
🥇 XAUT — Tether Gold
• It is issued by TG Commodities, a company in the Tether group.
• Its gold is held in custody in Switzerland.
• It offers access to gold through different compatible networks, depending on token availability.
🥇 PAXG — Pax Gold
• It is issued by Paxos Trust Company.
• Its gold is stored in accredited vaults in London.
• Paxos publishes monthly reports on reserves and has U.S. regulatory oversight.
DOES THAT MEAN ONE IS SAFER THAN THE OTHER?
Not necessarily.
A token being backed by gold does not eliminate all its risks.
We must also analyze who issues it, how the gold is held in custody, what reports it publishes, what the redemption conditions are, and what fees we pay.
In addition, there is one detail we should not forget: the price of gold can also go down.
And even though the backing is physical, we still depend on the issuer, custody, and the product’s conditions.
Learning to invest also means understanding what we are buying and what risks we are taking.
