Crypto: Solana speeds up to 200-millisecond blocks

Solana is preparing to complete a speedup that began in August. The crypto network is set to reduce its target time between blocks from 250 to 200 milliseconds during epoch 1053, scheduled for October 9. At this pace, there can be five block production opportunities every second, compared with 2.5 when Solana was still running at 400 ms. The blockchain is getting faster, but its theoretical overall capacity is not doubling.

Solana is set to go from 250 to 200 milliseconds per slot.

The network will target five block production opportunities per second.

The third step comes three weeks after Solana went from 300 to 250 milliseconds. This new reduction is set to take effect at the start of epoch 1053, around 3 p.m. UTC, according to Anza, the team developing the Agave validator client. The schedule has been rapid. Solana was still running with a 400 ms target before August 21. The network then moved to 350 ms, followed by 300 ms on August 28 and 250 ms on September 18.

200 ms is the final stage of the SIMD-0525 plan. A slot is the short period during which a designated validator can produce a block. By shortening this window, wallets, trading apps, and exchanges receive new information from the blockchain more frequently.

At 400 ms, Solana targeted approximately 2.5 block opportunities per second. At 200 ms, that figure rises to five. Twice as often.

Twice as many blocks, but not twice the capacity

This is the most important distinction in the upgrade. Solana is not simply doubling everything. When the network operated with 400 ms slots, each block could contain up to 60 million compute units. At 250 ms, that limit had already fallen to 37.5 million.
