AI giants are sparking a domain-name battle, and crypto companies are joining the land grab.

On October 7, ICANN announced 1,615 applications for new generic top-level domains—the first application round since 2012. The .agent domain is the most fiercely contested, with 13 applicants, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta, vying for control. OpenAI submitted applications for 15 domains at once.

Meanwhile, the crypto industry is also making moves. Several crypto companies are targeting industry-related top-level domains such as .bitcoin and .wallet, hoping to secure their place early in the next generation of internet addressing.
