Someone asked: What is a Merkle tree, and why can’t blocks do without one?
I usually answer like this: Ethereum uses an improved Merkle Patricia Trie to record account states, transactions, and receipts, and the block header stores the corresponding root hash. The beauty of a Merkle tree is that a single, very short root hash can “lock in” a huge number of transactions, and any change—even to just one transaction—will be detected.
