$BTC Top traders’ long/short position ratio: 1.57 (61% long / 39% short).
I used to think that a long/short ratio above 1 meant there were more long positions than short positions across the entire market. Later, I realized that the top traders’ long/short ratio doesn’t reflect the whole market. It compares long and short positions among the top 20% of accounts by margin. Overall, the total number of long and short positions is always equal, so if this group of top traders holds more long positions, it means the remaining accounts hold more short positions.
The long/short ratio alone can’t tell you whether prices will rise or fall. It should generally be considered alongside open interest, funding rates, and price.
Understanding an indicator helps you avoid being spooked by the numbers; it’s not a tool for predicting whether prices will rise or fall.
