【Old Leek Watch】$ZEC Plans to support quantum-resistant signatures in January next year as privacy coins begin addressing quantum risks
The Zcash (ZEC) development team plans to advance features related to quantum-resistant signatures in January 2027. The goal is to enable the network to verify hash-based signatures and reduce the risks posed by future quantum computing threats to traditional cryptography.
There are three key points:
🔹 Protect transparent addresses first: Reports indicate that around 70% of all issued ZEC is held in transparent addresses. These are the main focus of the current plan.
🔹 The whole network won’t be upgraded all at once: Shielded addresses use different cryptographic mechanisms, so quantum-resistant protection for them will need to be considered separately.
🔹 January is a development target, not a confirmed mainnet launch date: The specific network activation date has not been announced and will depend on development progress.
Quantum security is gradually shifting from a long-term technical discussion to a security issue that crypto projects need to plan for seriously. However, there is currently no evidence that quantum computing has compromised the wallet keys of any major cryptocurrency.
For ZEC, what matters next isn’t how much hype the words “quantum-resistant” generate, but whether the development team can deliver as planned and how much of the network the subsequent upgrade will cover.
