The Merkle tree, in a few sentences:
Simplified payment verification (SPV), described in Section 8 of the Bitcoin white paper, relies on Merkle paths to let light clients verify transactions without downloading entire blocks.
The beauty of a Merkle tree is that a single, very short root hash can “lock in” thousands of transactions, and any change to even one transaction will be detected.
Light wallets get their data from the nodes they connect to. For large incoming payments, it’s a good idea to cross-check them using several block explorers.
