The signature says it expires tonight. Will the token spending permission expire too?

The deadline shown in a wallet pop-up may only limit how late an authorization signature can be submitted. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the token spending permission will disappear once the submission succeeds. When studying permits, it’s easy to confuse these two clocks and mistakenly assume that a token authorization is still valid—or has expired.

Suppose a signature must be submitted before 11 p.m. tonight, and the app submits it at 10 p.m. Once 11 p.m. arrives, you can’t conclude solely from the original signature deadline that the spending allowance already established has been reset to zero. The actual outcome depends on the token contract’s authorization and expiration mechanisms.

ERC-8255, proposed in May this year, is discussing token authorizations with expiration dates and explicitly distinguishes these two things. As of this review, it is still a draft and includes compatibility exceptions, so it would be wrong to say that authorizations already expire automatically by default across the entire Ethereum ecosystem.

My checklist is: who can spend, how much they can spend at most, and when the authorization expires after successful submission. If you’re following the $ETH ecosystem and using tokens such as $USDC and $UNI , check each token’s actual contract rather than assuming it has adopted the draft. First understand which step the signature expiration notice applies to, then assess how long your funds are exposed.
