$BTC fell from 87,200 to 80,300—where did the selling pressure come from?
$BTC slid from around 87,200 all the way down to 80,300, a retreat of nearly 7,000 points. Many people’s first instinct is to look for a piece of “dumping news,” but this decline looks more like several forces piling up at once than a single headline suddenly changing everything.
First, 87,000 wasn’t the first time price met resistance. Previous attempts to push higher failed to hold above this area, showing that selling pressure was already building overhead. The structural signal was there before the drop itself.
Second, rising Treasury yields and growing economic uncertainty put risk assets under pressure across the board. BTC failed to show independent strength, and some of the profits built up during the earlier rebound began to unwind.
Finally, the decline triggered liquidations of leveraged long positions. Liquidations weren’t the starting point of this pullback, but once the price broke below key levels, they concentrated selling pressure and accelerated the move down.
So it’s important to distinguish the factors behind this decline: resistance at 87,000 was the starting point, weaker risk appetite set the backdrop, and leveraged liquidations amplified the move.
There has been a reaction around 80,300, but that doesn’t mean the structure has recovered. The next thing to watch is whether price can reclaim 82,500 and hold above it—that will help show whether selling pressure is starting to ease.
The market will provide the answer. I’ll just keep tracking how far it gets in confirming this.
