Came across this on CryptoBriefing: StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson said Thursday that Starknet is seriously considering moving from an Ethereum L2 to an independent L1—to take the initiative on post-quantum upgrades instead of being held to Ethereum’s timeline.

The comparison he gave was striking: if Starknet goes independent, its target is to become quantum-resistant by 2027; Ethereum L1 is currently aiming for full quantum resistance by the end of 2029; and Bitcoin has yet to provide a comparable timeline. The reason is that L2s’ security roots are in Ethereum, so how soon their cryptography can be upgraded depends largely on the mainnet.

They already have ZK-STARKs and a cryptographic agility roadmap, and see AI-accelerated mathematical breakthroughs as another source of pressure. Moving to L1 is still an option, not a finalized hard fork, but the direction is clear.
