🍿 Crypto battle of the week: “Uncle Charles vs. Panic-Monger Vitalik”

Who’s who. Vitalik Buterin created Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency and a platform for “smart contracts.” Charles Hoskinson founded Cardano, a competing blockchain. Interestingly, early in his career, Hoskinson was part of the Ethereum team, but later left and built his own project. So this isn’t just a debate between two experts—it’s a showdown between former colleagues who now run competing “shops.”

The story. Imagine two neighbors in an apartment building. Both sell door locks.

Vitalik (owner of the “Ethereum” store) steps into the stairwell:

— Guys, AI has gotten really good at math. In a couple of years, it might be able to figure out the key to lattice locks. Let’s install a hash lock too, just in case, and make the keys bigger!

Charles (owner of the “Cardano” store) sticks his head out of the neighboring door:

— Vitalik, this is panic! These locks are 40 years old; thousands of scientists have tested them. Besides, you just love your hash locks too much!

And adds, more seriously:

— If you convince people that lattice locks are unreliable, they’ll stop replacing old locks with new ones altogether. The whole internet will suffer, not just our stores!

Vitalik shrugs:

— I’m not yelling “fire.” I’m just suggesting we buy a fire extinguisher.

The upshot. One is convinced a fire extinguisher is needed right now. The other thinks shouting about a fire does more harm than the fire itself. The building is still standing, but the argument is raging. 🍿

The moral: when two owners of competing stores argue about security, it’s always worth asking whose lock they’re really advertising.
