The US moved $1 billion in Bitcoin: is a sell-off coming? ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‹

The US government has made major moves across its crypto wallets. Following transfers worth $770 million, the US Department of Justice moved another 12,267 BTC, worth around $1.01 billion. In total, over three days, authorities distributed nearly $1.9 billion in assets, including $94 million in USDT stablecoins.

What this means for the market:

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Tied to the Bitfinex hack. The Bitcoin that was transferred is connected to the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex exchange.

โš–๏ธ This isnโ€™t a panic sell-off. In 2025, a court approved the process of returning these funds to the affected exchange. Most likely, the coins are being moved as part of restitution proceedings, not for sale on the open market.

๐Ÿ“‰ Pressure on the price. Despite the technical nature of the transactions, the transfers coincided with a crypto market downturn that wiped out around $120 billion in market capitalization over the week. Traders are reacting nervously to any billion-dollar transfers by the authorities to the Coinbase exchange.
