U.S. Senator Sets Sights on Tether! Cantor Fitzgerald Asked to Explain Its Relationship With the Company
The spotlight is now on more than just USDT—it’s also on the financial network behind it.
On October 8, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal wrote to investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald, asking it to explain its business relationship with stablecoin issuer Tether and its related anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance measures.
Here are a few key points to watch 👇
1️⃣ The investigation focuses on the financial ties between the two
The senator asked Cantor to disclose revenue from its work with Tether, its equity stake, custody business, and related audit and compliance records. He also requested a response by October 23.
2️⃣ Why has this suddenly drawn attention?
Earlier, Blumenthal released an investigative report stating that some wallets linked to Iran and its affiliated organizations made extensive use of USDT. The report also questioned Tether’s approach to freezing related illicit funds. Investigators analyzed 846 relevant crypto wallets.
3️⃣ How close are Cantor and Tether?
Cantor has long provided custody services for some of Tether’s U.S. Treasury reserves. The senator also asked Cantor to disclose its stake, earnings from the relationship, and any interests connected to the business involving U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and his family. The related allegations and valuations should be distinguished from facts that have been confirmed.
It’s worth noting that being investigated does not mean that a party has broken the law. Tether, for its part, says it has worked with law enforcement for years and claims it has frozen nearly $550 million in USDT linked to Iran this year.
My take: The stablecoin race is no longer just about issuance and market share.
The more deeply USDT penetrates global payments and financial systems, the more likely reserve transparency, sanctions compliance, and fund-freezing mechanisms are to become regulatory focal points.
The real test for the stablecoin industry going forward will be how to build a sufficiently credible compliance and risk-control framework while expanding adoption.
