On October 8, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) officially finalized its rules for cryptocurrency ETFs. A total of 11 related notifications (including notifications from the Capital Market Supervisory Board and the SEC Office) will take effect on October 16 (UTC+8). In the initial phase, eligible assets are limited to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Products must passively track a single asset, maintain an average net exposure of at least 80% of net asset value to a single crypto asset during the fiscal year, and be listed and traded exclusively on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). Fund assets must be held by digital asset custodians supervised by the SEC. Brokers may not provide margin financing for purchases of these ETFs, and investors must confirm that they understand the product risks before trading.
The rules taking effect does not mean funds will be listed that day: issuers must still meet compliance requirements for establishment, custody, and other matters. The announcement did not name the first issuers, launch date, or ticker symbols. Initially, alternative channels such as depositary receipts for offshore crypto ETFs aimed at ordinary retail investors are also not permitted. Meanwhile, Thai mutual funds and private funds are authorized to invest in domestic crypto ETFs, subject to existing holding limits. In the market, as of October 9 at 14:59 (UTC+8), $BTC was trading at around $82,575 on Binance spot, down about 0.40% over 24 hours; $ETH was around $2,499, down about 2.72% over 24 hours.
