ETF outflows have exceeded $300 million for 8 straight days, yet whales bought $19 million overnight: Whose signals should we trust in this market today?

I did a double take at the ETF data—institutions are selling so decisively, so why are prices still rising?

① Selling: On October 8 (U.S. time), U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $244 million in a single day. Only Franklin’s EZBC recorded net inflows. Spot Ethereum ETFs saw net outflows of $72.54 million, marking their eighth consecutive day of outflows. Combined, about $316 million flowed out in one day. (Source: SoSoValue)

② Buying: Wang Chun, co-founder of F2Pool, directly swapped 235.5 WBTC (about $19.31 million) for 7,848.5 ETH on-chain after prices dipped overnight. Swapping BTC for ETH is a public bet on ETH’s relative strength. (Source: Ember Monitoring/Foresight News)

③ Also buying: Ozzy, founder of Pons, bought spot BTC today—for the first time since January 2023, after nearly three years. The amount wasn’t disclosed, but the act of “buying for the first time in three years” speaks volumes. (Sources: Foresight News, ChainCatcher)

④ The biggest buyer is nearly done: BitMine’s Ethereum treasury is nearing its 5% holding cap and is expected to wrap up in six weeks. After that, it will shift from “scooping up coins on the secondary market” to “staking for yield.” In other words, one of ETH’s biggest institutional buyers is nearly out of ammunition. ⑤ Prices (checked live on Kraken at 13:43 this round): $BTC 82416 (24h +0.8%), $ETH 2493 (+0.5%). BTC has rebounded from below 81,000 yesterday to above 82,000.

My take: ETF outflows are mostly passive redemptions (panic + algorithmic trading), while whales are adding positions by choice. Institutions are reducing exposure while whales are betting on a rebound—the bigger the disagreement, the greater the short-term volatility. BitMine wrapping up is also a potential concern, since ETH will lose a source of sustained buying demand.
