Starknet floats becoming an L1 (as of Oct 9, 2026, 12:40 ICT)

FACT: On Oct 8, Starknet's official X account said it is "actively considering becoming an L1", which it says would make it the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as the target. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised the idea minutes earlier, citing the quantum threat and fast-moving AI.

FACT: His argument: as an L2, Starknet relies on Ethereum's security, so its post-quantum timeline partly depends on Ethereum's. Bankless reported on Oct 8 that there is no formal proposal or vote yet. Today Starknet is still an Ethereum L2.

FACT: Starknet's docs schedule up to 127M STRK (1.27% of supply) to unlock for investors and early contributors on the 15th of each month through Mar 15, 2027. The next one is Oct 15.

FACT: On Binance spot, STRK/USDT traded near 0.069 at 12:38 ICT, up about 41% in 24 hours on roughly $48M volume.

INTERPRETATION: The market is reacting to an idea, not a decision. How security, bridging and governance would work as an L1 hasn't been published, and leaving Ethereum's security is a real trade-off, not just an upgrade.

OPINION: Keep the headline and the timeline separate. A formal proposal would be the real signal to watch, and the Oct 15 unlock is worth keeping in mind when reading short-term moves.
