Do you also think of DeFi as “bringing banks onto the blockchain”?
That’s only half right. What DeFi really changes isn’t business hours—it replaces “trusting institutions and manual approvals” with “automatic execution according to publicly available code.”
In traditional finance, opening an account, borrowing, and trading all require institutional approval. DeFi, on the other hand, uses smart contracts to set the rules: connect a wallet, meet the collateral requirements, and the contract executes—no teller needs to approve each transaction.
For example, using $ETH as collateral to borrow $USDC, the key point isn’t just that the funds arrive faster. The contract handles the borrowing terms, interest rate changes, and liquidation rules. On-chain trading works similarly: your wallet connects directly to a decentralized exchange, and you bear the risks of price fluctuations and slippage.
So, to understand a DeFi project, you don’t need to memorize complex jargon first—start by asking 3 questions:
1. Who controls the assets?
Are users operating them through their own wallets, or is the platform still holding them on their behalf? “Being on-chain” does not automatically mean truly decentralized.
2. Can the rules be checked?
Are the collateral ratio, interest, and liquidation conditions public? If the rules are unclear, so-called transparency is only marketing.
3. Who bears the risk?
No clerks does not mean no risk. Smart contracts may have vulnerabilities, collateral assets may drop and trigger liquidations, and insufficient liquidity may also magnify slippage.
This is also a structure worth watching when observing markets related to ETH: the more active DeFi becomes, the more obvious the demand for collateral assets, stablecoins, and on-chain liquidity; but activity does not mean prices will definitely rise, and it cannot replace risk assessment.
Next time you see a DeFi project, don’t rush to look at the yield rate first. Use these 3 questions to check whether it is truly reshaping finance or just putting a new on-chain wrapper on it.
