According to the FT, a week ago there was talk that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was close to $70 billion. Now the company is telling investors it’s closer to $50 billion. The $20 billion difference is mainly down to how the figures are calculated: the $70 billion figure was reportedly estimated by OpenAI investors to make a direct comparison with Anthropic. Anthropic counts sales from its cloud partners; OpenAI does not.

“Annualized” means taking revenue from a given period and projecting it over a full year. It doesn’t mean revenue already received over the course of a full year. First make sure you know which figure is being discussed, then compare them.
