Trump’s August trades: a major Meta purchase, and plenty of sales

Meta $METAB had a purchase worth $5 million–$25 million on August 21, the most striking transaction in this disclosure. The filing was released by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on October 8 and contains 517 records.

Nvidia $NVDAB is easy to misread based on the headlines. The five purchase ranges add up to about $767,000–$1.58 million. On August 21, there was also a sale worth $500,000–$1 million. The ranges overlap, so the net direction can’t be determined. AMD $AMDB had a sale worth $1 million–$5 million on the same day.

One other detail is easy to get wrong: the SpaceX purchase on August 18 was, according to the original filing, senior unsecured bonds maturing in 2031 with a 5.35% coupon—not stock.

Going forward, I’ll treat this as a sample to watch. The Meta purchase is worth following, and the sales should also be presented in full. What we see in October reflects activity from August; prices and sentiment have changed. It has informational value, but shouldn’t be treated directly as a basis for buying or selling today.
