Solana block production scheduling is considering the introduction of “geographic orchestration,” speeding things up while planting new concerns.
Researcher Wattenhofer and Kniep proposed a plan: arrange $SOL validator nodes that are physically close to each other to produce blocks consecutively, so that block handoffs no longer depend on being “close to major staking centers.” According to their simulations, the average handoff delay between honest validator nodes could be reduced from 36.2 milliseconds to 17.0 milliseconds, without increasing the block production turn of any node. However, the proposal relies on nodes to self-report their geographic locations, and the blockchain has no means to verify whether the information is true or false. The simulations also found that three-round grouping could be combined to form six consecutive “adversarial windows.” The related proposal (SIMD-0675 draft) was submitted on September 29, and as of October 7 it was still under discussion and not yet deployed.
