【The lending business is booming again, but the bosses don’t dare celebrate 🥶💥】

People are lining up to throw money back into the danger zone. On-chain lending has surged to $56 billion, up a full 55% from July. Lending was still a minefield the year before last. $BTC is still treading water. Money is coming back too fast, and that’s actually making people nervous. 🧊

The good times already crashed once. In the second quarter, a whopping $11.33 billion flowed out. One Kelp DAO hack was enough to shatter confidence. Aave’s contracts didn’t break, but users couldn’t withdraw their money. Deposits plunged by $15 billion in one fell swoop. In plain English: the code didn’t crash, but people did. 😰

Protocols are starting to bring in AI to hunt for vulnerabilities. Aave used it to run tests and flagged 271 issues. Sounds impressive, but here’s the catch: a huge number were false positives. People still had to go through them one by one. AI didn’t save time—it just added another layer of work. 🤖

More worrying, AI is starting to manage money too. It holds permissions and controls on-chain assets, which makes it a target as well. With large holdings like $ETH, one lapse in access control can spell disaster. Human error can’t be outsourced to AI. If you can’t manage your passwords, no model will save you. 🔑

Money is pouring in too fast, putting pressure on managers too. If funds sit idle without earning interest, they have to find somewhere to invest them quickly. In a rush, risk controls can easily loosen. Every extra signature adds another point of failure. One platform has gone so far as to hand client assets over to a custodian. One less transfer, one less risk. ⚖️

This story isn’t new. In 2022, three major platforms collapsed one after another. On the surface, it looked like a technical problem; at its root, it was a failure of risk management. Personally, I think the recovery is a good thing. But don’t mistake it for a sign that things are safe. The faster the market grows, the louder the old problems come back to haunt us. ⏳

📌 A lending recovery doesn’t mean the risks are gone. Keep a closer eye on risk management than on returns.
