$ALGO positions surge 32.7%, hiding a reversal

Shorts—don’t laugh too soon.

ALGO is currently 0.12032. In the past 24 hours, it’s only up +2.1%. The funding rate slid from -0.0127% to -0.0133%, becoming even more negative. Short-side strength has increased—looks like they’re in the lead.

What about open interest? +32.7%. 10.9M > 10.3M > 10.4M > 14.5M. The price hasn’t really flown—real money is pouring in. Is this a sluggish, low-volume downtrend? Someone is pushing the price down, and others are building positions.

But flip the logic: the more negative the rate, the more expensive shorts are. Who pays for a negative funding rate? Shorts do. With three conditions stacked—deeply negative funding, a spike in positions at low levels—the fuel for liquidation and cover builds up inside the market.

Trading volume is $107.5M, market cap $1.09B—spot is on full display. Liquidity isn’t lacking; what’s missing is confirmation of direction.

Don’t read “shorts are winning” as “you can just lie back.” When the funding rate turns, the increased cost will first be collected from the group with the heaviest leverage.

A negative funding rate isn’t a guarantee of a rebound. First, figure out clearly how far your liquidation price is from 0.12032.
