❗ EU gave crypto companies three months to stop using USDT
ESMA (the EU financial markets regulator) demanded that companies holding a MiCA license (European crypto rules) stop services involving stablecoins that do not comply with these regulations. The main one is USDT: Tether does not have a MiCA license.
• Companies must close all remaining balances of such transactions no later than 8 January 2027
• Previously they only restricted trading and exchange; now they also added custody, transfers, and portfolio management
• Clients will be allowed temporarily to sell the tokens or withdraw them
This instruction is to national regulators, not a new law: it is they who will monitor that companies comply.
